Gail Queen

I loved the building business, but when interest rates hit 20% in 1982, it suddenly lost its attraction. New houses were impossible to sell, but older homes, whose owners could provide "creative financing," were still selling, so the idea of selling real estate was not crazy.

My brother Dale, I, and three friends had just won a liquor license in a lottery, but the ABC would only let one of us hold the license. We decided Dale could have it. He bought Cayucos Liquor, whose owner had sold the license, and began remodeling. Part of the building had been an apartment, and Gail Queen suggested putting in a real estate office.

Dale and I both held real estate licenses to help our building customers, and the idea of having an actual office was very appealing considering the impossibility of building new homes when interest rates were so high.

Gail had a long background in real estate so when she said she would work for us, we opened up an office called The Real Estate

Company. My other brother, Gene, was the Broker. Gail had her work cut out for her, but she did an admirable job teaching us the ropes.

She would work until her husband, baseball great Mel Queen, had to report to spring training. When the season was over, she would return and we would start learning more real estate lessons. And we learned some dandy ones. Ask us sometime about the customer named Mickey.

When interest rates returned to normal, I went back to building and Gail went into the medical field.

I returned to real estate full time in 1993, and I was so happy when Gail came through the door during our grand opening with her son Chris, who subsequently became this year's Top Producer.
