Located at the far northern end of Morro Bay high on a hill, this home has total City, beach and Rock views. The living area is level with the street so you just walk straight in, kick back in a comfortable chair and soak up the views. The charm of the freestanding fireplace creates the perfect ambience for relaxation. Bedrooms are downstairs.
Morro Strand Beach State Park is just down the hill. It used to be called "Atascadero Beach." There is a stop light at the intersection of Yerba Buena and Hwy 1, so walking to the beach is safe now. Surfers love this part of the beach and if you don't plan on joining them, then you can enjoy watching them "shred" the waves. Just around the point to the north is another great beach.
Maybe you remember the old Standard Oil pier that used to jut out into the waves right where the Toro Creek Bridge is. When I was a kid, we used to fish off of it. Of course, you had to know the combination to the gate, which, fortunately for all the avid fishermen, was 1492.
Years ago huge oil tankers anchored off shore in this area. The pier was essential to the business as tugboats went back and forth between the pier and the tankers. These gigantic ships were common back then as they picked up crude oil from the pipeline from Bakersfield, delivered jet fuel for the air base at Lemoore, and delivered fuel oil for the PG&E power plant. When the Montebello oil tanker was sunk by Japanese torpedos during WWII off of San Simeon, tugboats picked up survivors and brought them to this pier. Now when you look out where the pier was until it broke up during the once-in-a-century storm of 1995, it is hard to imagine how striking it was and how useful. Oh well, one new pipeline from the oil fields directly to the refineries and suddenly there is no more use for a pier and tankers.
There is a great deck off the livingroom of this home facing the south towards Morro Rock. Having a deck on the south side of a home in Morro Bay is almost priceless because it is out of the prevailing wind. Most of the other hillside homes have decks facing the ocean. Everyone wants a deck when they move here, but only the south facing decks are truly used year around. Count them. I bet you can't find more than ten in the entire City.
Did I mention the kitchen? You don't have to leave this home for a meal unless you want to. The family chef can take care of the meals right here. If the chef is on strike, take a ride south on Main to Lolos Mexican Restaurant. Introduce yourselves to Nick and Becky Mendoza. They've owned and operated this restaurant since 1985. Their son was on the Morro Bay High School Football team that was undefeated this year for the first time since 1995. Don't ask them about it if you are in a hurry.
You are going to have a wonderful vacation here at this home so be sure to tell us about it in the guest book so we can share some of your adventures. Happy vacationing!
